Valley of the Moon Winery Celebration ~ Napa Event Photography ~

It was great fun photographing the event at Valley of the Moon winery to celebrate their 150th anniversary.  It was great fun, great food provided by The Girl and the Fig,  The Speakeasies were a lot of fun and well of course the wine was fantastic!  They really know how to throw an event in wine country.

Backyard Weddings ~ San Francisco Wedding Photography ~

I’m a total San Francisco city dweller.  What is a backyard?  But this wedding was held in the backyard of a wonderful couple for their daughter and new daughter-in-law and was fabulous!  The details screamed Restoration Hardware and everything so warm, inviting and unique.  The team on this wedding was Woodland’s Floral by Catherine, Insalata Catering with Chris Engel (who makes an absolutly AMAZING taramasalata) and A Memorable Event by Ceil Mangelli who oversaw the details.  I am so happy and honored to be a part of this wonderful couple’s day.

My First Wedding Photography Assignment ~ San Francisco Wedding Photography ~

Misti Layne “working” her first wedding!

I remember this day so vividly it’s amazing.  It was not a good day!!!  For some odd reason I was not happy about this wedding and being in this wedding.  I remember my mom trying to get us both ready and I just wasn’t happy.  She called her DJ friend who was on duty and had him play my favorite song–Seasons in the Sun–which he did.  Yes, I know now it is quite a morbid tune BUT as a kid and you can sing “seasons in the sun” it is quite fun!  So anyway on to the story.  I don’t recall the ceremony but do remember the reception and just being a little pissy UNTIL I was given this camera.  I remember the moment vividly and fortunately someone was there to take a photograph of me.  Now of course there is the ahem, cute factor going on here.  The point however is I guess I was just meant to be a wedding photographer!  The road I took was quite winding and the road less traveled to be sure but I did find my destiny.  I love just waking up every day knowing I’m going to photograph something…anything!

So I guess it just goes to show that some things are innate to us but not always obvious.  Thankfully, I found the right road eventually.  No regrets at all!

I Do Events is a great blog and posts often Bay Area, San Francisco Wedding Photography and Photographers.  Here are some images from some of my favorite weddings.

Engagement Portraits Napa, Ca Wine Country ~Napa Wedding Photographer~

Sarah has been a friend for years and I am so happy she found Tres!  She’s an executive assistant at a winery and does a lot of planning for them so she planned the travel idea, the locations, the outfits and the accessories!  I love when clients have ideas!  It really brings their unique relationship to the table.  It was so fun and somehow in the process of rolling on the ground getting different angles I even ripped my jeans!  The engagement portraits to me are so important and I really do love doing them.  While I have known Sarah for years it is a great opportunity to work with couples on a fun day without stress and we learn about each other in the process.  Then too you have some great engagement portraits in the process!

Sarah has seen me work numerous times but now she was in front of the lens and for the first time ever Tres got an idea of the process too.   So because of this we have familiarity, ease and trust the moment I walk into the wedding to photograph the big day.  This is an important step in the process.  Yes you have to love your photographer’s style and images but you have to really like them too.  A florist drops off flowers and you may or may not see them.  The photographer?  Well, we are with you all day!  So it’s important to really like and trust them.

A special thank you too to the Robinson Family Vineyard!  The not only provided us with the location and the car but a great tasting too!  Yes, I do get to drink on the job!  Without them these engagement portraits Napa wouldn’t have been the same!

MODERN MODE

Pat Gibbons Florals

Pat Gibbons Florals

BEHIND THE BLOOMS Serving San Francisco Bay area weddings and special events, veteran floral designer Patricia Gibbons of Pat Gibbons Floral, El Cerrito, Calif., turns out picture-perfect traditional and vintage tabletop arrangements, but her signature style is contemporary.

HISTORY LOOKS For a summer wedding with a Victorian theme, Gibbons plans to incorporate items from the client’s collection, such as antique prints, feathers and shells, “which I’ll be using to create vignettes along with floral displays,” she notes. The centerpieces themselves will include succulents, garden roses and blackberry sprays, gathered in mercury glass — “very popular this year,” she says — in shades of purple and ivory. To keep the centerpieces of a piece with the overall wedding design, Gibbons also will line the ceremony aisle with hydrangeas that start in deep purple and fade to lavender, then ivory — an echo of the ombré wedding cake.

SQUARE DEAL “I’m known for modern designs that have an Asian influence, and I like to bring that aesthetic fusion to my work,” Gibbons explains. To decorate the long, rectangular banquet tables that have replaced standard rounds as a wedding staple, Gibbons likes to “echo the line by using rectangular containers going down the tables. Zinc containers with black river rocks create a bold statement.”

STYLE ON A DIME “Hydrangea is one of the best flowers to use to create a full, budget-friendly display,” Gibbons notes, “while curly willow branches or loops of bear grass can be brought in to add to add height and movement to the design.”

Intimate Wine Country Wedding in Healdsburg ~Napa Wedding Photographer~

Suen and Jerry are such a loving, adorable couple.  They kind of secretly married just the two of them and because her father wanted to see her in a white dress they did it again for friends and family.  It was an intimate affair at a private home in Healdsburg.  Who poured the wine and made sure guests were happy?  Jerry did!   Who made sure to keep people calm when the officiant was late?  Suen did!  They put the priorities on their guests with great food, great wine and making sure people felt at home in this home!  I love small intimate affairs like this and the images I can get are so endearing and so indicative of that.  The intimate moments are what make a wedding.  Yes, the flowers, the dress, the bride and groom to be sure!  But when it comes down to it…the love and feelings and emotions of all!  This gallery includes some details but I had to include the smiles, the laughs and happiness too.

My Arista Winery Wedding on I Do Events! ~Napa Wedding Photographer~

I’m honored to have another wedding on I Do Events!  Michelle and Dan came all the way from New Jersey for their destination wedding at Arista Winery in Healdsburg.  They were such a lovely couple and their family and friends definitely brought Jersey to the West Coast by dancing long before the dance floor “opened”!   The day was lovely, intimate and fun was had by all.   The flowers were by Dragonfly Floral who really did a great job with the setting of the vineyard during the Fall season.   Taking them into the vineyards with the setting sun was just gorgeous.

This family owned winery is so beautiful and the McWilliams are just delightful.  There are two large lawns for the ceremony and reception as well as a Japanese Garden and of course vineyards.  During the Fall this is truly one of my favorite venues.   The wines, well they too are amazing.  Pinot Noir is my favorite and this is really one of the best.  A venue is a huge part of a wedding.  Some people even choose their date based on the availability of their favorite venue.  It sets the tone and atmosphere of the day whether you want a winery, seaside or 5 star hotel ballroom.

So when thinking of your venue start with what means the most to you.  Do you like nature and trees then there are a lot of locations nestled in the woods.  Seaside?  Well in California you have more options than anywhere else!  Hotels are so amazing in San Francisco that you can have new and modern lines like the Intercontinental or go retro in places like the Westin St. Francis and Palace Hotel.   But where ever you choose just love it and the people who coordinate there.  They will make sure it is as memorable as you hope.

Make Up Artists and Wedding Photography ~Wedding Photographer San Francisco~

I love make up artists for weddings!  They really make a difference in many ways beyond the obvious.  First of course they know their craft and how to make clients look their best.  Second they understand photography and what works best for me.  Every day makeup applications and special event makeup is very different and when photography is involved well, even more so.  A bride or her maids or mom may not feel it necessary because we apply makeup every day or it isn’t in the budget or just don’t think it necessary but make up artists really do make a big impact.

This is a day when you should be taking the time for yourself.  Let someone else pamper you, let you look your very best and make sure that you love the way your photographs look.  When you feel beautiful it shows through your soul and then when you see me coming with my camera you will smile with your whole being and voila–amazing images.  On your wedding day there is so much going on so let someone else do what they do best and hire a professional make up artist.  Do you research though!  It is really important that you do the trial, make sure they have good reviews on Yelp or the like and aren’t just someone who buys some make up and calls themselves a make up artist.  This goes for any vendor you hire.  When I walk in I want you to feel like “great Misti is here!”  This should go for ANY vendor you hire.

I do have some recommendations for make up artists for you.  Below are some of my most favorites.  I’ve worked with them numerous times and their reputations are well established.  If you have questions about hiring a make up artist then call them!

Wedding Shoes and Misti Layne

I’m admittedly a shoe hoarder.  My friends tease me constantly but I don’t mind as it is quite true!  When I see the bride before the wedding one of my first stops after a hello hug to the bride and meeting her family is the shoes and then yes, the dress!  This year’s weddings have had some amazing shoes and the trend of colored wedding shoes that I saw starting a few years ago has not stopped!  This year I have to even give huge kudos to a bride’s mom who was wearing some spicy shoes I truly envied.

Wedding shoes no longer are just the plain white they used to be.  Color, sequins, rhinestones, heels, flats, even cowboy boots have made my bride’s lists!  Sometimes they are a hidden surprise that really only the bride knows but other times in a shorter dress or tea length wedding dress they be total show stoppers for guests.  One bride even taught me about Milk and Honey Shoes where you can totally design your own shoes.  Unbelievable!  You design everything from the heel height to color to texture and straps.

I love California weddings and truly San Francisco weddings.  We have some amazing and unique people here and this truly shows through to their weddings.  Don’t be afraid to try something you normally wouldn’t wear and don’t be afraid to have a few pairs!  You think the bride in the bright green McQueen shoes wore them all day? Absolutely not!  She had another pair for walking on the grass and dancing later.  After all a girl can never have too many shoes and wedding shoes too!

A Wedding at Hacienda De Las Flores ~San Francisco Wedding Photography ~

Heather and Eric got married at Hacienda De Las Flores and I have to say it was a most amazing day!  We had a great time at their engagement session so I knew what I was in store for this day.  But one surprise was just how much crying was going on!  It was tears of joy and unbelievably touching.  When Heather’s father came in to see her before the wedding he took one gasp and the tears poured from everyone!

But there is no doubt about the love and joy from Heather and Eric and their families.  It was just a perfect day.  The flower girls wore tutu’s and t-shirts and sequin shoes. Adorable!  Heather even designed her own shoes at Milk and Honey in bright turquoise.    The flowers were by Laura Miller, the food stations with pizza, pasta, sliders, grilled cheese and tacos were amazing and done by Alex’s Catering who also did a smore’s station and ice cream bar. The DJ from Denon and Doyle got everyone moving and just a great time was had by all with Larisa Marr capturing it all on video too!  All the best to you guys!

Molly and Adam’s Wine Country Wedding at Arista Winery ~Napa Wedding Photography~

Molly and Adam are just adorable.  They planned their beautiful wine country wedding at Arista Winery in Healdsburg.  We had so much fun this day and I’m pretty sure their portraits in the vineyard show that.  It was very low key and casual with the bride and groom getting ready together.  The flowers were by Dragonfly Florals and Park Avenue Catering catered with an amazing menu.  Arista really is one of my favorite places for a wine country wedding and you can see my other Arista weddings on my blog too.  All the best to you Molly and Adam!  I”m honored to have been photographer of your beautiful wedding!
