Backyard Weddings ~ San Francisco Wedding Photography ~

I’m a total San Francisco city dweller.  What is a backyard?  But this wedding was held in the backyard of a wonderful couple for their daughter and new daughter-in-law and was fabulous!  The details screamed Restoration Hardware and everything so warm, inviting and unique.  The team on this wedding was Woodland’s Floral by Catherine, Insalata Catering with Chris Engel (who makes an absolutly AMAZING taramasalata) and A Memorable Event by Ceil Mangelli who oversaw the details.  I am so happy and honored to be a part of this wonderful couple’s day.

Pelican Inn Wedding ~ Wedding Photography San Francisco ~ Misti Layne

This wedding was unique in that the bride was French and brought along a few new customs and I got to work barefoot! The day was so beautiful albeit a bit windy but for this couple it didn’t matter.  They brought together their families to start a new life and celebrate with close friends and family.  The ceremony was held at Stinston Beach and Celine Hakoun of Avenue Lesage Events has this place looking amazing.  We then went off to the fun and quaint Pelican Inn near Muir Woods.  I love this place and the rustic feel of it all.  Pico Designs added pops of color and elegance from the flowers to the event.   One of those weddings that just really makes me appreciate what I do and who I do it with…great vendors and of course a beautiful couple.

San Francisco Presidio Wedding~ San Francisco Wedding Photography ~ by Misti Layne

San Francisco locals Adam and Christine really took their guests into account for this really “fun” priority wedding.  We started at their home which was great with the awesome views and a ridiculously funny cat.  I have to admit I did get a little distracted by her.

Then from there we were off to the Presidio Chapel and then the Golden Gate Club.  Not only do these places have great views but they are historical and easy for guests to get to.  If you know San Francisco, this is huge!  But the most unique part of this day was for the first time ever I’ve seen karaoke done at a wedding and it rocked!  The crowd loved it and I have to say it was really entertaining and amusing for me as well.  All the best to you both, I think there are a lot of laughs and much fun in your future together.

Wedding Portraits ~ San Francisco Wedding Photography ~

My favorite wedding portraits are those that are just simple, timeless, natural and show the love and uniqueness of a couple.   They can be silly and romantic at the same time!  I think Rob and Britney are just that perfect example!

I Do Events and San Francisco Wedding Photography

I Do Events is a great blog and posts often Bay Area, San Francisco Wedding Photography and Photographers.  Here are some images from some of my favorite weddings.

Ceremony Magazine and San Francisco Wedding Photography

Ceremony Magazine recently published its first ever San Francisco edition.  It’s truly a beautiful magazine for wedding planning resources, professional wedding vendors and San Francisco wedding photography.  I’m truly honored to be a part of it and have my images and real weddings within it’s pages!  The magazine has sections for wedding ideas, real wedding’s photography with the couple’s stories, detailed information on venues, photographers, florists and everything weddings you could need.  It’s really a great wedding planning resource guide and beautiful too!

Recently my wedding images of Sara and Todd’s St. Francis Yacht Club  wedding was highlighted in Ceremony Magazine’s blog.  This was an amazing day with an amazing couple.

Ceremony Magazine is about professionals in the wedding industry and what they can do.  Speaking only for photography of course, there are a lot of people who pick up a camera and call themselves a wedding photographer.  Sadly, I’ve heard a lot of bad stories in regards to wedding photographers from brides who were crying because they hired someone who professed to know what they were doing only to be disappointed in the end with their wedding photographs IF they got their wedding photographs.  I recently heard a story of a photographer who wouldn’t go out into the rain to get a new flash card so was deleting images during the wedding to make room for new images.  I always laugh when people come in with their list of questions from a magazine that are recommended to ask a photographer but I’m happy to answer the questions.  It means you’re doing your research and taking this seriously!

When it comes to the relationship you have with your photographer it is important you love their work but also that you love them and trust them!   I hope that when I walk into that room to start photographing your day you know you can trust me, that I will deliver what I promise, that I’m coming with $25,000 worth of equipment and don’t mind getting wet if need be!

So be assured that the people you find in Ceremony Magazine are among the top of San Francisco and you can trust them!

MODERN MODE

Pat Gibbons Florals

Pat Gibbons Florals

BEHIND THE BLOOMS Serving San Francisco Bay area weddings and special events, veteran floral designer Patricia Gibbons of Pat Gibbons Floral, El Cerrito, Calif., turns out picture-perfect traditional and vintage tabletop arrangements, but her signature style is contemporary.

HISTORY LOOKS For a summer wedding with a Victorian theme, Gibbons plans to incorporate items from the client’s collection, such as antique prints, feathers and shells, “which I’ll be using to create vignettes along with floral displays,” she notes. The centerpieces themselves will include succulents, garden roses and blackberry sprays, gathered in mercury glass — “very popular this year,” she says — in shades of purple and ivory. To keep the centerpieces of a piece with the overall wedding design, Gibbons also will line the ceremony aisle with hydrangeas that start in deep purple and fade to lavender, then ivory — an echo of the ombré wedding cake.

SQUARE DEAL “I’m known for modern designs that have an Asian influence, and I like to bring that aesthetic fusion to my work,” Gibbons explains. To decorate the long, rectangular banquet tables that have replaced standard rounds as a wedding staple, Gibbons likes to “echo the line by using rectangular containers going down the tables. Zinc containers with black river rocks create a bold statement.”

STYLE ON A DIME “Hydrangea is one of the best flowers to use to create a full, budget-friendly display,” Gibbons notes, “while curly willow branches or loops of bear grass can be brought in to add to add height and movement to the design.”

Ceremony Magazine comes to San Francisco

I had the honor of being featured in Ceremony Magazines debut San Francisco issue this year.  It’s a truly, truly beautiful magazine!  Some seem so redundant and pushing the same old information but this one works with the best of vendors.  Here is a link to a floral spread that I did with them and Michael Daigian Floral Designs.  As well I did a spread of wedding I did with Sara and Todd Stone at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco with the moody Golden Gate bridge in the background (page 216 if you want to check it out!).

It’s always an honor to get weddings published.  It isn’t easy!  So many photographers are submitting and a wedding really needs to stand out and be unique.  Sara did an amazing job with planning her wedding and pretty quickly too!   Here is my original blog about them…Sara and Todd Stone at St. Francis Yacht Club.  Magazines can help a lot for a bride who wants to do design and plan things on her own.  They provide excellent ideas and information that helps sift through all those Google searches!  I still always recommend a wedding planner as they know they ins and outs of weddings but when you prefer to do it yourself or it isn’t in the budget magazines help immensely.  Ceremony Magazine did a great job of pulling together some amazing locations, florists, photographers, videographers, caterers etc.  Use this resource!

Welcome Ceremony Magazine and thanks for having me!  All the best in your future in San Francisco!

Wedding Photography Featured on IDoVenues

I had a wedding I photographed recently featured on IDoVenues.com.  It was a great day with Jessica and Brett at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in  San Francisco’s Union Square.  It was a beautiful sunny day and this was one fun crowd.  You can see in the post just how fun and beautiful this event was to photograph.

My good friend Laurel Winzler of Laurel Designs did an amazing job with the flowers and it’s really important to work with great people to help you in your own job.  It can be really daunting to plan a wedding and book vendors.  I always recommend a professional wedding planner or professional event planner but sometimes it’s just not in the budget or people really want to do it themselves.   Be prepared to spend a lot of time planning your wedding!  When you hire a professional they can recommend people they know well and trust.  This is the most important step. A lot of times I walk into a wedding event and know the DJ, florist, venue coordinator or caterer and it’s great because we make sure we are all on the same page and make sure it goes off without a hitch.  Other times it’s important to introduce myself and make sure we keep communication open during the event to keep things running smoothly.

However way you decide to go with either a wedding planner or no planner make sure you are in communication with your vendors and you know they are dependable and reputable and experienced.  I know budget is a concern sometimes.  But just be sure you hire the best you can afford. One example of a vendor I worked with that was not good is a videographer I had never met before.   I’m not sure what their experience was but some things that I noted and actually had to point out or fix myself was:

  1. An electrical cord lying completely across the dance floor
  2. Electrical cords untaped in the middle of walkways
  3. The light from the camera always in my shots
  4. No communication on planning and staying out of the way of each other

These are all very serious issues.  Can you imagine if your grandmother were to trip over a cord?  That is really inexcusable.  So hire the best you can!

I hope you enjoy the images on IDoVenues but here are a few too from the hilarious engagment session we had at the Embarcadero waterfront and Flora Grubb in Hunter’s Point, San Francisco.

Cheers,

Misti

A Wedding at Hacienda De Las Flores ~San Francisco Wedding Photography ~

Heather and Eric got married at Hacienda De Las Flores and I have to say it was a most amazing day!  We had a great time at their engagement session so I knew what I was in store for this day.  But one surprise was just how much crying was going on!  It was tears of joy and unbelievably touching.  When Heather’s father came in to see her before the wedding he took one gasp and the tears poured from everyone!

But there is no doubt about the love and joy from Heather and Eric and their families.  It was just a perfect day.  The flower girls wore tutu’s and t-shirts and sequin shoes. Adorable!  Heather even designed her own shoes at Milk and Honey in bright turquoise.    The flowers were by Laura Miller, the food stations with pizza, pasta, sliders, grilled cheese and tacos were amazing and done by Alex’s Catering who also did a smore’s station and ice cream bar. The DJ from Denon and Doyle got everyone moving and just a great time was had by all with Larisa Marr capturing it all on video too!  All the best to you guys!

A St Francis Yacht Club Wedding ~San Francisco Wedding Photographer~

Sara and Todd are so fun together and their dog Ellie is just hilarious!  As ring bearer for the wedding she was horrible!  But it sure made for good photos and a lot of laughs.  Their ceremony and reception were held at the St Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco.  Amazingly we had some sun during the ceremony and shortly after that mist and then rain.  We had all of about 8 minutes for portraits but we got them in.  The party was fantastic and the big surprise for Todd the huge Giant’s fan was Lou Seal!!  Congrats guys!

Marine Memorial San Francisco Wedding ~San Francisco Wedding Photographer~

Stephanie and Chris are just the cutest couple.  We had so much fun with them and their wedding party.  The laughs really never stopped!  The wedding took place at St. Peter and Paul in San Francisco and the Marine’s Memorial ballroom.  The flowers were by Dianna Vigil and the cake by Aileen Chang in San Leandro.    We had a great time shooting the portraits down by the arrow sculpture on the Embarcadero all in about 14 minutes with no time to spare!  It was  an amazing day and the photos live up to that.
