International Surgical Foundation ~ Event Photographer Scottsdale ~

I’ve worked with the International Surgical Foundation on numerous events (see my other posts especially the Surgeries in Domincan Republic) and there are always a lot of laughs but it’s never forgotten that the purpose is to raise funds to bring help to those in need.  The Venue in Scottsdale provided an amazing location.   The event was hosted by Kaley O’Kelley from 3TV and Kwamie Lassiter (who has his own foundation as well) and Junior Spivey came to lend their support as well.  Great job and effort done by all.

Valley of the Moon Winery Celebration ~ Napa Event Photography ~

It was great fun photographing the event at Valley of the Moon winery to celebrate their 150th anniversary.  It was great fun, great food provided by The Girl and the Fig,  The Speakeasies were a lot of fun and well of course the wine was fantastic!  They really know how to throw an event in wine country.

Artists Working Together ~ Portrait Photography San Francisco ~

I love the collaboration of artists working together and supporting each other.  Why they are not supportive or encouraging surprises me.  Here are instances of me working with a variety of artists and the imagery really is a collaboration.  The results are fantastic and a benefit.  Let’s work together for the better.  Be supportive with other creatives!

Wedding Portraits ~ San Francisco Wedding Photography ~

My favorite wedding portraits are those that are just simple, timeless, natural and show the love and uniqueness of a couple.   They can be silly and romantic at the same time!  I think Rob and Britney are just that perfect example!

Jason Brock Entertains at Martuni’s ~ San Francisco Music Photography ~

I got to hear Jason Brock sing really for the first time at Martuni’s Bar in San Francisco the other night and he blew me away!  I did see him sing at the Nitey Awards but he was with Honey Mahogany doing a song and just not the same.  Yes, now you know that I don’t watch those types of TV shows but he was funny, entertaining and as I know him, just a really sweet guy.

Don Reed entertains to support 51Oakland.org ~ San Francisco Event Photography ~

Don Reed is an amazing talent.  He brought his show East 14th Street to Yoshi’s in San Francisco in support of 51Oakland.org a charity started by Yoshi herself and Jason Hofmann.  The show was truly brilliant.  Don Reed was funny, entertaining, poignant and reverent all in one.  You really must see his show at some point.

The Brown Twins find support at Red Devil Lounge ~ San Francisco Event Photography ~

The Brown Twins, Miriam and Vivian,  of San Francisco are living icons of this City.   We have something in common too in that we are all from Michigan!  These lovely ladies have been gracing this City for decades and an event put on at the Red Devil Lounge by Jenn Bergeron brought out supporters from everywhere.  It was fun, joyful and a great time was had by all.  The talent included Kim Nalley, legend Frank Jackson, lots of amazing burlesque dancers and was hosted by Suzanne Ramsey.  The lovely and talented Jane Weidlin of the Go Go’s even dressed up as one of the Twins!  It was a fantastic turnout and made me proud to be there and a part of it.

Napa Valley Wine Auction ~Corporate Event Photography Napa~

An amazing corporate event photography for the Napa Wine Country Auction with Pat Friday’s beautiful floral arrangements,  Billy Valentine serenading the crowd and A-Max Entertainment wowing the guests!

Napa Wine Auction, Colgin Cellars ~Napa Event Photography~

Every year I photograph the Napa Wine Auction dinner at Colgin Cellars in St. Helena.  It’s truly an incredibly beautiful place.  Thomas Keller of French Laundry personally caters the event for guests from all over the world who have come for the Napa Auction.  It’s fun to watch Thomas in the kitchen and just how smooth the process is especially when compared to me in the kitchen.

Colgin Cellars is high above Lake Hennessy in St. Helena and provides the most gorgeous of sunsets.  The wine is to die for and the furry residents are most adorable!  Ann and Joe always provide a great time.  Dancing, music, amazing food and a setting not open to the public provide an amazing time.   It’s truly a privilege to photograph this wine country corporate event and all its glory.

Equality California Event at The Fairmont Hotel ~Event Photographer San Francisco~

I had the pleasure of photographing the Equality California Charity Event last week and it was a great time for all.  Held in the ballroom of The Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, the charity event raised over $45,000 to support the LGBT community.

Senator Dianne Feinstein received an award from the group honoring her support of the LGBT community.    The adorable Wilson Cruz of film and TV fame did a great job hosting and the crowd just loved Thelma Houston.  Ms. Houston sang all her old signature songs and just had people dancing in the aisles.  It was a fantastically fun charity event to photograph and I hope the photos show that!  Who says a corporate event photographer can’t have fun.

Professional Environmental Corporate Portraits ~Corporate Portraiture San Francisco~

Professional images for business or corporations are more important now than ever.  They are used in promotional materials, websites, LinkedIn, blogs, speaking engagements etc.  Setting consistency in business is always important and now that images are so prevalent these days it’s just as important in most any corporate and professional service industries.    Business owners, attorneys, corporations, speakers, realtors, authors and all types of industries are changing from the standard gray or black or white background to something that shows more personality and depth.  Environmental corporate portraits can take place in an office or on the street which makes for an image that can really stand out from the rest.

My experience photographing people in and environmental setting have an easier time and feel less stressed in this situation which brings about an image that can express a person and personality far better than the sit here, turn, angle, chin down image.  Images have texture and depth that just isn’t the same in a studio shot.  I often hear a client say “I just want my image to have more personality than the standard kind of gray look.”  This is exactly what you do get.

Living in the San Francisco/Bay Area we truly set the tone in many industries especially in technology and creative industries.  There is no reason why your photograph shouldn’t represent you at your best, be something you are actually proud to use and help your business too.

A partial list of my clients are here.  If you want an image that resonates and makes a great impression, call me.  See the difference yourself.

ABC 7, AIG, Alain Pinel Realtors, Anshen + Allen Architects,  Bingham, Bryan Cave LLP,  Buzz Media, Cisco, Colgin Cellars, Dave Flemming-Giants Announcer, Disney,  Goodwin Proctor, Green Ivyed,  Incisive Media, Merrill Lynch, Payne + Fears,  Reid Hoffman-LinkedIn, Ropes Gray, SAP, ShotSPotter,  TAJ and many more.

Photography isn’t just about a camera!

Why do you really need more than just your images on a CD?  Let me explain!  You won’t save money and you wont’ get the best that you deserve.

Since the dawn of digital I get asked a lot “I just want the raw files on CD”.   Well, if only it was so simple.  I once thought of this situation when I saw an advertisement for doing self-surgery and I think it was removal of a kidney!  My thinking is to leave it to the professionals and this is why…too much can go wrong.  I’m a photographer specializing in people so things like wedding photography, event photography and corporate and head shot portraits.  I wouldn’t imagine going in to an industrial commercial situation and say I know what I’m doing.  I definitely do not!

I recently got an email from someone who wanted engagement photos taken and wanted the raw files.  He mentioned he was a photographer but I saw he actually had another full time career.  So the dilemma for me is, as an artist, the image I take doesn’t end at just the push of a button and do I want someone else to not let me finish my process.  It’s a whole lot more.  I often run into amateur photographers who ask why I don’t do this or have that or tell me their Nikon is better than my Canon etc.  The best thing about photography is that there are a million ways to do it and all of them your way if you choose it to be that way.  But there are things that can wrong.

The process of being a photographer isn’t just about owning a camera. It is a whole lot more and I won’t even begin to discuss the business aspect of it in this post.   Experience, vision, education, tools, passion and creativity are all a part of it.  It starts with “seeing” the image. You have to see something, maybe manipulate it to make it better, make some technical choices and then perhaps change your mind again because it wasn’t right.  Oddly enough the biggest part of taking an image for me is getting my subject to connect to me and forgetting the camera.  Yes, you read that right.  I want us BOTH to forget the camera.  When the subject is in front of me whether for a wedding portrait during their wedding or acting head shots or a family portrait the camera is just a tool and believe it or not I mostly shoot in P.  Yes, you read that right too.  Once I have my basic settings and choices in equipment I use P or A and nothing else (this is in Canon I’m not sure about Nikon settings).  If I fiddle with the camera and try to think about technical things then my client can get restless, lose mood or feel uncomfortable.  If this happens the shot is lost and I have nothing anyway.  This is why you see emotion, expression and feeling in my images and not a perfectly posed, placed portrait.  Cameras today are built with a zillion different algorithms so why not trust them?

Once that part is done there is the post production which with digital is more complicated than film.  Developing choices in film can be made and then labs will still look at all your negatives and work with the color or adjust chemicals for a different grain or you can push or pull your negatives.  All of these processes lead to the final “image” that was in my mind’s eye when I pushed that button.  If you get the chance Google Ansel Adams and look at the extensive notes he did when printing his images.  They were never straight out of the camera and there was never just one print.  When I develop prints there are other choices that need to be made and all of this my artistic expression.  In regards to post production on digital images the process is all on your computer but those choices of intensity, brightness, color, filters are all the same thing leading again to my choice as my final image.  Here is a sample of images that about post production choices that made the images stand out and feel “finished”  Intimate Weddings, Documentary Weddings, Head Shots

So when you are choosing a photographer for your wedding or family portraits or even just head shots remember it isn’t just about owning a camera and while your friend is “into” photography it’s always best to hire a professional and trust them and let them do what they do best.  It is NOT about the camera and definitely not a good idea when it is your wedding and no chance for a do-over.  What about head shots?  You only get the one chance for that first impression.  Do you want to risk that to an image that isn’t finished?  Let’s be honest, will you ever make that album or retouch those photos yourself within the next couple of years even?  Most likely not!

While digital photography has brought cameras to the masses and some amazing pictures taken there is a big difference with a professional photographer.  Find the right one for you and you won’t be sorry.

Commitment Ceremonies ~San Francisco Wedding Photographer~

Susie and Eloisa married this past year at Boon.  Boon happens to be one of my favorite spots.  The ladies who own it really have a unique eye and passion for what they do and it shows.  The hotel has very clean lines and uses orange brilliantly!  The mascot, appropriately named Boon, is a delightful dog who mingles easily among the guests.  Susie and Eloisa brought together Mexican and Persian elements in just an amazing way and their friends and family were just delightful.  I don’t think I have laughed this hard at a wedding, truly.   I really appreciate doing weddings for gay couples.  It isn’t really a marriage by law but yet there is still the same passion and love as any other union.  I love that.  All the best Elo and Susie!
