International Swingers at Studio 606 ~ Music Photography Los Angeles ~

What an experience!  I had the opportunity to photograph The International Swingers when they recorded at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 recently.  The mixing board has it’s own amazing story which you can check here soundcitymovie.com.  Not knowing what to expect had me a little apprehensive and nervous and definitely anxious.  But the band, consisting of Clem Burke, Glen Matlock, James Stevenson and Gary Twinn could not have been easier to work with at all.  They were open and approachable and truly just fun.  I mean, I was in their faces all day and they could do what they had to do and well, not hold it against me if I was a nuisance.  It was my first time documenting during a recording or even seeing the process for that matter.  It was quite impressive and done old school on tape and produced by Brett Gurewitz which will then be released on–wait for it–a 45! I was truly impressed by the process and all those who are truly amazing in their fields.  Thanks for letting me be a part and so happy for the new friendships and experience.  There is an amazing relationship between photographers and musicians and this was exactly that.

International Surgical Foundation ~ Photojournalism by Misti Layne ~

The past few months have been really non stop and I love it!  I just returned from Scottsdale for a wonderful photography conference that has me totally energized to hit the pavement with my camera for a trip soon to Turkey.  A country I really enjoy and can’t wait to go back and shoot some film again!  Yes, I said film!

One of my best friends has a brother who is a back surgeon in Scottsdale, Arizona.  He’s been going to the Dominican Republic to do corrective surgeries for people who cannot afford it and are truly limited in their lives due to pinched discs and scoliosis and a plethora of things that can happen without proper care.  Remember the “bend over” test in grade school where they checked your spine?  They don’t do that in Dominican Republic and I’ve never seen anything like what I did there.  Also we went to the local children’s hospital where incredibly there could be 3 kids in one bed surrounded by family.  It was tough and enlightening. If you ever think you have it bad…come back and look at these images.

The families and patients were so incredibly grateful for this opportunity.  Almost 30 people came together on their own time and dime to help these people.  It was for me a photographic experience I won’t soon forget.  Apparently the next stop is Chad, Africa.  I’m in!  These images for the most part are not graphic but a couple may make you squeamish.  I apologize but I think it is truly essential to the story.  Photojournalism needs to tell a story and this is a must. Thank you for looking.
