A man and his dog ~ San Francisco Portrait Photography ~

I had such a wonderful time doing this portraits.  Firstly, Capp was just too cute for words and luckily for Christian I didn’t try to take him home in camera bag.  Secondly, Christian really came prepared for his portraits with outfits planned out and a great smile.

San Francisco Engagement Session

The laughs and love Jamie and James have for each other is just obvious. We had a lot of fun doing this San Francisco engagement session and I think you can tell! It started at the bar for the nervous bride to be and ended jumping puddles in the street. It was a great day!

An Intimate San Francisco Wedding

Sandra + Dinesh, ~ San Francisco Wedding Photography ~ Misti Layne

If there is a wedding that says San Francisco Wedding Photography this is it.  It was just an intimate wedding at City Hall with some portraits at iconic San Francisco landmarks.  This couple is truly beautiful inside and outside and it was an absolute honor to be part of the day.  Best to you both!

Sandy, New York City and Me ~ San Francisco Photographer ~

Every year for many, many years I have gone to NYC once or twice a year.  I first went when I was 18, went to NYU and it holds a little bit of my soul.  This year was a bit different. I got caught in Hurricane Sandy.  It wasn’t so bad in Manhattan for me.  We were left in darkness but on 30th Street so walking to 39th Street wasn’t so bad.  For those downtown, it was a very different story.  My friend and I walked the Brooklyn Bridge then caught a cab back home.  Driving through Chinatown made me feel like it was war torn Vietnam.  No lights, nothing recognizable, no people and no English signs.  It left me with a sort of discombobulated feeling.  It didn’t feel like the place I’d known for so long.  I am glad I experienced it and of course, got home but for those who are still dealing with it I cannot fathom the pain and agony it has caused.    These images were taken with not the right equipment–I came prepared for head shots not a hurricane but I hope leaves some sense of what it was like to be there.

Little Amelie ~ Napa Family Portrait Photographer ~ Misti Layne

Little Amelie had her first professional portraits taken in a beautiful private home in St. Helena.  We let her run, smell, walk, fall and smile to her hearts content!

Boys will be Boys ~ San Francisco Family Portrait Photographer ~

One was happy and one was cheeky.  One was willing and one was fighting.  One became sad and the other then became happy.  The crazy day of child photography!  But when you let kids be kids the faces, the expressions, the cheeky NO and the smile say much more than “Look at the camera and smile!”

Family Portraits ~Portrait Photography San Francisco~

This lovely family and I spent the afternoon in Golden Gate Park and just let things happen. We had no say in what happened next and it was quite fun!  Portrait photography and frankly just about all photography of a personal nature should be about emotions, expressions and feelings.  I think these images express that.   Sareen was totally in charge here for everything!  She’s quite  a happy and adored little girl and I think that shows.

San Francisco Family Portraits at Golden Gate Park

Sareen is just a delightful, happy, curious little girl.  The only time she didn’t laugh or smile during our San Francisco family portraits in the park was when she wanted crackers–very, very much!  It’s important to go with the flow with kids.

I’m not one at all to say look at the camera.  Parents get those shots.  I want mine to say “this is a unique person discovering life before your very eyes”.  Let their personality shine!  I also love the shots most parents would hate–the crying and fits.  They are quite funny when you are done dealing with them.  Of course when your child turns teenager and sees this they will not be happy!

At Home Family Portraits ~San Francisco Portrait Photography~

I first met the Daughtery’s years ago with their adorable Pug Vito.  He was a total charmer with a toothy grin.  When they called to do some family portraits with their new daughter I remembered them ONLY when he said Vito was our dog!  We did these family portraits at their home in San Francisco.  The front bedroom had amazing natural light and we piled everyone–the dogs included of course–on the bed and created some truly simply, beautiful and intimate family portraits.

Families come in different types and sizes and capturing the nuances of a family is the goal for me.  They are never the same!  I never know what is going to happen and just go with the flow.  Especially with babies and pets.  In this case, it was both!  The dogs were just too cute and the baby, well she was totally at our mercy but the irony is we had to work according to her desires!

The images show a beautiful family in all it’s glory.  Congrats to the Daughtery’s!

of Johnny Ceravolo from When In Rome ~Musician Portrait Photography~

I have always loved live music and the eclectic nature and talent of musicians.   The passion they have is awe inspiring for me.  My friend Johnny Ceravolo is an amazingly talented musician and I had the pleasure of doing some black and white portraits of him recently.  He’s the lead singer for When In Rome and I originally met them when they played in San Francisco at the Red Devil Lounge.  Being a product of the 80’s I had to go see them along with Missing Persons and it was a great show.

I wanted to do some artistic musician portrait photography and he thankfully agreed!  We went to Franklin Park in Los Angeles and the weather was perfect.  I was last there with Tara Novick at 5am a couple years ago and it was moody and misty. This time it was sunny and lent itself to the dark, contrasty idea we had of black and white film and simple.  I believe the character of a musician has to show and I believe these do show Johnny and his personality and provide a sense of who he is.  He’s an amazing talent and I got wait to work together again!

Engagement Sessions Before Your Wedding ~Engagement Photographer San Francisco~

I love doing engagement sessions and I love doing engagement portraits in the San Francisco Bay Area.  The reasons are simple really. First I get to know you as a couple, no wedding stress and just us photographing in the environment. I’ve done engagement portraits at the standard Chrissy Field, Baker Beach and Ferry Building and unique places like a wine bar, cigar bar and Flora Grubb.    I get to see how you act and are with each other.  This is really important.  A lot of people don’t think them necessary and they certainly are not.  However, we get to learn about each other during this time.  You get to see how I work too and then know what to expect on the day of your wedding.  Then when I walk in you don’t see me as a stranger but as the photographer you trust, know will make everything right and have fun with!

I’m not about posing people in my images.  It’s actually just not my forte.  I also believe that if I just let you “be” as a couple the images will say SO very much more than some standard pose.  If you look at the images in this post.  Not one is posed.  Not one and bring your pets!  But anyway, I may have directed things a little bit and yes, I instigate!  But I want you to feel comfortable to be who you are.  I look for those moments that say something.  That make me feel something about you.   I think this is the way that when you look back at that day and like your wedding day you will be able to say I remember it all like it was yesterday.  Success!

Support the Le Sueur Cheetah Project!

I had a truly life changing experience in South Africa and I’d like to do something in return. The Le Sueur Cheetah Project was just truly an amazing experience for me. They need money and more so now because one of the cheetahs is pregnant which is wonderful. Please consider purchasing one of my images. All profits will go to Le Sueur. They really need support and I hope to do just a little bit. Thanks a ton!

Pregnancy Portraits ~San Francisco Portrait Photographer~

Angela and John are expecting little Jackson in the next couple of months and I’m so excited for them.  We did these in their home and included a few of course of their cats (see the post Cat Portraits).  They are such a cute and fun couple.  I don’t think I stopped laughing and with all the natural light, bounds of happiness and love I couldn’t go wrong.  I can’t wait to do the baby portraits!

San Francisco Engagement Portraits ~San Francisco Wedding Photographer~

Sara and Todd are getting married in May and after dealing with weather delays, typical to San Francisco, we finally did the engagement session at the Ferry Building in San Francisco.  It was great!  First, it was a place where no one has or will be able to take portraits again.  Very cool for me!  Secondly they were game for anything!  We had lovely Ellie with us but Sara and Todd were willing to stand on a glass box 3 stories up.  I’m not sure I would have actually done it but they both just jumped right up and went along with my whim.  They are a fun and beautiful couple and I can’t wait for the big day!
