International Surgical Foundation ~ Event Photographer Scottsdale ~

I’ve worked with the International Surgical Foundation on numerous events (see my other posts especially the Surgeries in Domincan Republic) and there are always a lot of laughs but it’s never forgotten that the purpose is to raise funds to bring help to those in need.  The Venue in Scottsdale provided an amazing location.   The event was hosted by Kaley O’Kelley from 3TV and Kwamie Lassiter (who has his own foundation as well) and Junior Spivey came to lend their support as well.  Great job and effort done by all.

SIlicon Valley Rocks at DNA Lounge ~ Music Photography San Francisco ~

A great time was had by all at DNA Lounge’s Silicon Valley Rocks event to help bring music and keep it in schools so that kids may rock on for years to come.  I was happy to share in the music and fun with such a great group of people.

International Surgical Foundation ~ Photojournalism by Misti Layne ~

The past few months have been really non stop and I love it!  I just returned from Scottsdale for a wonderful photography conference that has me totally energized to hit the pavement with my camera for a trip soon to Turkey.  A country I really enjoy and can’t wait to go back and shoot some film again!  Yes, I said film!

One of my best friends has a brother who is a back surgeon in Scottsdale, Arizona.  He’s been going to the Dominican Republic to do corrective surgeries for people who cannot afford it and are truly limited in their lives due to pinched discs and scoliosis and a plethora of things that can happen without proper care.  Remember the “bend over” test in grade school where they checked your spine?  They don’t do that in Dominican Republic and I’ve never seen anything like what I did there.  Also we went to the local children’s hospital where incredibly there could be 3 kids in one bed surrounded by family.  It was tough and enlightening. If you ever think you have it bad…come back and look at these images.

The families and patients were so incredibly grateful for this opportunity.  Almost 30 people came together on their own time and dime to help these people.  It was for me a photographic experience I won’t soon forget.  Apparently the next stop is Chad, Africa.  I’m in!  These images for the most part are not graphic but a couple may make you squeamish.  I apologize but I think it is truly essential to the story.  Photojournalism needs to tell a story and this is a must. Thank you for looking.

Don Reed entertains to support 51Oakland.org ~ San Francisco Event Photography ~

Don Reed is an amazing talent.  He brought his show East 14th Street to Yoshi’s in San Francisco in support of 51Oakland.org a charity started by Yoshi herself and Jason Hofmann.  The show was truly brilliant.  Don Reed was funny, entertaining, poignant and reverent all in one.  You really must see his show at some point.

The Brown Twins find support at Red Devil Lounge ~ San Francisco Event Photography ~

The Brown Twins, Miriam and Vivian,  of San Francisco are living icons of this City.   We have something in common too in that we are all from Michigan!  These lovely ladies have been gracing this City for decades and an event put on at the Red Devil Lounge by Jenn Bergeron brought out supporters from everywhere.  It was fun, joyful and a great time was had by all.  The talent included Kim Nalley, legend Frank Jackson, lots of amazing burlesque dancers and was hosted by Suzanne Ramsey.  The lovely and talented Jane Weidlin of the Go Go’s even dressed up as one of the Twins!  It was a fantastic turnout and made me proud to be there and a part of it.

An amazing corporate event photography for the Napa Wine Country Auction with Pat Friday’s beautiful floral arrangements,  Billy Valentine serenading the crowd and A-Max Entertainment wowing the guests!

Equality California Event at The Fairmont Hotel ~Event Photographer San Francisco~

I had the pleasure of photographing the Equality California Charity Event last week and it was a great time for all.  Held in the ballroom of The Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, the charity event raised over $45,000 to support the LGBT community.

Senator Dianne Feinstein received an award from the group honoring her support of the LGBT community.    The adorable Wilson Cruz of film and TV fame did a great job hosting and the crowd just loved Thelma Houston.  Ms. Houston sang all her old signature songs and just had people dancing in the aisles.  It was a fantastically fun charity event to photograph and I hope the photos show that!  Who says a corporate event photographer can’t have fun.

Support the Le Sueur Cheetah Project!

I had a truly life changing experience in South Africa and I’d like to do something in return. The Le Sueur Cheetah Project was just truly an amazing experience for me. They need money and more so now because one of the cheetahs is pregnant which is wonderful. Please consider purchasing one of my images. All profits will go to Le Sueur. They really need support and I hope to do just a little bit. Thanks a ton!

Little Angel’s Baby Portraits for Moment by Moment

I met Angel and his family back in February to do family portraits.  Mom had him dressed just like a little man!  He’s the sweetest little boy and takes everything in stride quite well considering most of his time is spent in hospital.  This session was set up by Moment by Moment and I’m happy to be a part of the group.  Mom asked me back recently and it was great to see how much he’d grown.  Once again he was looking quite dapper!  All the best to little Angel and his family.

The Cove, Peace in Taiji

I recently watched the movie The Cove and it wasn’t easy.  I’ve always loved dolphins since I grew up watching Flipper.  My mom after a while though wouldn’t let me watch anymore because I would always end up crying!  Well, this movie is well done and utterly important and it’s crucial that change happens and soon.  I’ve grown up with animals and not known a day without them since a child.  Whether dogs, cats, cows, horses, birds they are just a cause that is important to me.  Dolphins too.

I have to admit I did do the swim with the dolphins before I knew any of this was happening.  It was the most amazing experience and while I will never forget it I do regret it.  I felt so at peace with these creatures and I know they felt my feelings, admiration and love.  For most of the “swim” there were 3 dolphins that chose to stay with me and 2 that were with the 12 others.  It was amazing, incredible and one of the most inspiring moments of my life.  I know these creatures need to live and breathe and commune in the world with us. Looking into their eyes is a memory I’ll never forget.

Please, please take a moment if you care to The Cove site.  Spread the word!  The sad irony here is that many Japanese don’t know the dolphin kills even take place and sadly dolphins are laden with mercury and their flesh is eaten by their own children and disguised as expensive fish.  Mercury poisoning is preventable and an utterly horrible existence to suffer.  Please take action and share on Twitter, Facebook, your blog and anywhere you can.  Thank you!

Children’s Photography for Moment by Moment ~San Francisco Portrait Photographer~

I recently had the absolute pleasure of photographing little Angel this week.  He’s a total charmer!  He’s a patient at UCSF unfortunately but they are taking great care of him.  His older brother and mom visit him every day and the nurses just love and pamper him like crazy.  He has the most amazing temperament being confined in a hospital.  I’ve been working with Moment by Moment for years and so highly recommend them and the idea of giving families a chance to photograph their kids in sometimes very difficult situations.  I wish all the best to this wonderful family.  Please visit www.momentbymoment.org and your support is greatly appreciated.

Asian Pacific Islander Benefit at Design Center ~San Francisco Event Photographer~

I had the pleasure of photographing the Bloom Gala at the San Francisco Design Center for the Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Benefit.  It was definitely a successful event with an auction and speakers that ranged from Dr. Sanjay Gupta from CNN, local AIDS awareness spokespeople and politicians Fiona Ma and Phil Ting promoting health in the Asian and Pacific Islander communities.  It was a night of great food from Yank Sing, Anzu, Jasmine Gardens, KC Catering, Le Soleil, Mercury Lounge, Patisserie Phillipe, Poleng Lounge and Sukhi’s Gourmet Indian Cuisine.  The entertainment–Good Asian Drivers–was truly unique with a mixture of poems, rap, singing and laughter.
